Video: Laura Marling, Ryan Adams: “Oh My Sweet Carolina”
As Ryan Adams explains in this clip from last night’s Live at Abbey Road, Laura Marling’s sophomore LP became a driving force behind his latest album, Ashes & Fire, when their mutual friend/collaborator Ethan Johns passed it along while he was writing new material. Marling has also been a longtime Adams fan, of course, citing his name in “New Romantic,” the opening track off her 2007 debut EP. Now this mutual appreciation society has finally resulted in a duet: Here’s Marling singing the Emmylou part in Heartbreaker’s “Oh My Sweet Carolina,” live from one of the world’s most famous recording studios.

If you haven’t seen the new-ish Tumblr thekittencovers you’re missing out on some amazing stuff. This is one of my favorites, along with David Meowie, Cat Morrison, and Bob Kitten. Mixing kittens with album cover designs? LOVE.
The new video for “Lonely Boy” is a simple uncorrected (or maybe overcorrected) recording of a middle aged guy showing off his dance moves to the song. When I saw it for the first time I couldn’t help but think of Fatboy Slim’s video for “Praise You” directed by and starring Spike Jonze back in ‘99. Love them both.
Andrew Bird (and Beck 10 years ago) are the only living musicians who can turn me into a crazed fan not unlike a crazy teen seeing The Beatles in 1964. I LOVE HIM. And I’m crazy excited about this documentary.
Trailer: Andrew Bird Documentary, Fever Year
We just heard Andrew Bird’s Norman score, but now comes a film project focused entirely on the singer-songwriter himself: Fever Year, director Xan Aranda’s 80-minute documentary on the latter half of Bird’s 2009, featuring studio footage, 10 live performances filmed at a pair of concerts in Milwaukee that October, and a guest appearance from St. Vincent. As of now, there are no plans to distribute the film to theaters (aside from screenings this fall/winter), but here’s hoping the trailer, which arrived today via indieWIRE, will give this project the boost it needs to reach fans’ screens worldwide. Catch a glimpse of Fever Year — described by Aranda as “a snapshot of a time during which [Bird] became perfectly adapted to the music hall” — above.

The album released in April but I must’ve been sleeping. I picked it up last night after hearing a large portion live at his show at the Intersection in Grand Rapids. It was the third time seeing Brett live and I think the most fun I’ve had yet. He has an incredible magnetism on stage, always dancing and having fun. You can’t genuinely participate in the show and not come away in a great mood. Though a lot of his songs are about heartbreak or loneliness he manages to make them upbeat and optimistic. Even “Dancing At A Funeral” states, “Now is not the time to be so sad and mournful, we are going to the funeral and we’ll be dancing the night away. So don’t be so shy, we are living and we’re dying, we are laughing and we’re crying every single day.” The song begins with a pretty strong Paul Simon influence, in my opinion.
I highly recommend this new album, my favorite I think of his catalog though I loved Hope For The Hopeless. I also highly recommend seeing Brett live if you ever get the chance. I’m sure you’ll have fun.
LOVE this Dolly Parton song.
Video: Fiona Apple Covers “Jolene”
Despite exciting news of a new album being in the works, Fiona Apple’s 4th LP (originally aimed for a 2011 release) remains missing in action as of this fall. While we wait, her impressive run of live covers continues, as Apple has regularly taken the stage of LA’s Largo over the past year, more recently joining the Watkins Family Hour for unplugged folk renditions of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” the Everly Brothers’ “You’re the One I Love,” and a few more classic tunes. You can watch Apple sing the former take as a duet with Sara Watkins at the 40-second mark above, check out an excellent bluegrass version of “Fast As You Can” with the Punch Brothers’ Chris Thile over at Rawkblog, and revisit our growing collection of her covers here.

The new album, her third, was released this week to mostly good reviews. Many reviewers agreed with Paste Magazine,”Metals feels deliberately uninterested in courting pop audiences or crafting easy hooks, which is why it feels like such a refreshing and slyly badass statement of artistic integrity.” There’s no big hits on the album but that’s ok with me. It’s fits well with the more breathy, lyric focused tunes on her earlier albums. If you need the hits too I suggest shuffling her entire collection together.
Feist played the Late Show with David Letterman this week promoting the album. Here’s the video.
You can catch Feist at the Riviera Theatre in Chicago Friday, November 4th. The show is general admission.
One of the best fitting television theme songs ever. The Wonder Years, now on Netflix instant. Joy.
New prize addition to my vinyl collection, an original pressing in great shape. A gift from my aunt. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
NPR First Listen: Ryan Adams' Ashes & Fire
Album due October 11. I may be partial, being an insane super fan of DRA, but I’m already in love with this very country album. Ridiculously excited for the midwest tour!

The original country rock. Without Gram Parsons we wouldn’t have The Eagles, Dwight Yoakam, Ryan Adams, etc. Thank you, Gram.
New video of the title track on the forthcoming album.
Video: Ryan Adams - “Ashes & Fire”
Last week’s Iron Maiden cover was a welcome treat to tide us over until Ryan Adams’ Ashes & Fire arrives in full next month, but here’s an even better glimpse of what’s to come: the title track, performed live for an intimate studio take via the album’s official pre-order listing. Between this tune and the first single, “Lucky Now,” I feel safe in saying that we can look forward to one of Adams’ best efforts yet. Get psyched for October by watching the clip above.
