“Dancing At A Funeral” from Brett Dennen’s new album, Loverboy
The album released in April but I must’ve been sleeping. I picked it up last night after hearing a large portion live at his show at the Intersection in Grand Rapids. It was the third time seeing Brett live and I think the most fun I’ve had yet. He has an incredible magnetism on stage, always dancing and having fun. You can’t genuinely participate in the show and not come away in a great mood. Though a lot of his songs are about heartbreak or loneliness he manages to make them upbeat and optimistic. Even “Dancing At A Funeral” states, “Now is not the time to be so sad and mournful, we are going to the funeral and we’ll be dancing the night away. So don’t be so shy, we are living and we’re dying, we are laughing and we’re crying every single day.” The song begins with a pretty strong Paul Simon influence, in my opinion.
I highly recommend this new album, my favorite I think of his catalog though I loved Hope For The Hopeless. I also highly recommend seeing Brett live if you ever get the chance. I’m sure you’ll have fun.
